Sign up and log in
Sign up for a DigitalOcean account, and log in.
On the top of you will find a green "Create" button. Select the "Create cloud servers" option.
Choose an image
Select Ubuntu 18.04 (LTS) x64.
Choose a plan
Choose the plan that suits you. The Standard is good enough. You can consider General Purpose if you expect a very high load, but CPU Optimized is not relevant for this type of script.
If you scroll the plans to the left, you can choose the $5/mo plan which is fine for getting started. You can choose a more expensive plan if you expect a higher load. It is possible to upgrade later.
Of course it's recommended to enable backups, but it's optional and up to you.
Choose a datacenter region
Here you can select the location for your VPS. Choose a location near your users, or in a prefered jurisdiction.
Select additional options
No options are required.
Leave One-time password if you are not sure.
Finalize and create
Here you can select and enter additional options. You can leave the options as it is, or you can fill in the options according to your preference.
Hit the "Create Droplet" button when ready. A new droplet will be created and you will receive an e-mail with the IP address and password. You will need these later, now you can proceed with the next step.
